Newport Teen Assaulted Special Needs Student At Rogers High: Cops

The 16-year-old, also a Rogers High School student, was charged with assault, police said.

NEWPORT, RI — A 16-year-old assaulted a special needs student in the men's locker room at Rogers High School, police said.

The law learned of the assault Friday after officers were "made aware of several cell phone recordings," the Newport Police Department said in a media release.

"Newport Police Community Police Officers and Detectives conducted an investigation and identified the suspect as a 16-year-old local male and Rogers High School student," the release said.

The teen was arrested and charged with two counts of assault, according to the release.

"The Newport Police Department emphasizes that bullying will not be tolerated or condoned in our community," the release said. "All such acts will be investigated to the fullest extent."

The 16-year-old was to be arraigned in Newport Family Court Friday, according to the release.
