Obituary: Ann Quigley, 93, Proud of Newport Heritage

​Ann V. "Nan" Quigley 93, of Newport, Rhode Island passed away peacefully at Newport Hospital, Tuesday, June 14, 2016.

Ann V. “Nan” Quigley 93, of Newport, Rhode Island passed away peacefully at Newport Hospital, Tuesday, June 14, 2016. She comfortably left this world under the loving care of her family and the kindness and care of the Newport Hospital staff.

Nan was born in Newport on January 13, 1923, She was the daughter of John J. Quigley and Marguerite (Reynolds) Quigley.

Nan was the last of her brothers and sisters; she was preceded in death by her sisters Marie E. Phelan, Rita L. Russo and brothers William A. Quigley, John J. Quigley, Jr., Dr. Robert J. Quigley and her nephew Robert J. Quigley Jr.

She is survived by her sister-in-law Sharon Quigley. Also she will be remembered by her 17 nieces and nephews, 29 grand nieces and nephews and 26 great grand nieces and nephews. Aunt Nan proudly knew about them all, as family members visited her always when visiting Newport. The birth of each child was made memorable by an Aunt Nan’s beautifully knitted blanket that all received.

Nan attended St. Mary’s Parish School and graduated from Rogers High School. She began work as a papergirl for “Mammie” Reynolds’ Paper Store in the 5th Ward. Later on she worked at the Torpedo Station and then became a fixture at Tilden Thurber’s Jewelry Store and was with them as they moved and expanded through the years. She also found employment at T.W.Rounds, David Allan Goulash Jewelers and the Mole Hole. Proudly she worked fulltime until she was 74 years old and part-time retiring at 80 years young. Nan along with her brother Jack loved Newport history and kept abreast of things past and present. She was very proud of her Newport heritage and 5th Ward beginnings. Nan was a member of St. Mary’s Parish and a resident of Pelham Street for more than 90 years.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday, June 16, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport. A burial service will be held Friday, June 17, 2016 at St. Columba Cemetery Chapel, 465 Browns Lane, Middletown at 10:00 am.

In lieu of flowers donations in Nan’s honor can be made to the St. Mary’s Parish Building Fund, PO Box 547, Newport or to the Village House Activities Fund, 70 Harrison Avenue, Newport or to Palliative Care Hope and Hospice, 1085 N. Main St., Providence, RI 02904.
