Recycling Services Planned for St. Patrick's Day Parade

The Newport Energy and Environment Commission, the City of Newport Department of Public Services' Clean City Program, the Newport St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, RIRRC and the Met School Green Team are once again teaming up to bring recycling to the upcoming 57th Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade on Saturday, March 16 at 11:00 a.m.

Plastic bottles, aluminum cans, glass bottles and paper can be deposited in the recycling containers that will be coupled with existing trash barrels all along the parade route. The recyclables will be collected Sunday morning and the total weight of recyclable materials will be credited by the RIRRC to Newport’s recycling totals, resulting in a financial rebate to the city.

To increase the benefit to our environment, the commission encourages parade attendees to bring their own refillable beverage containers with them to the parade, and to give thought to reducing use of non-recyclables.

In addition to parade recycling, Brick Alley Pub is heading a litter and recycling collection effort the morning after, Sunday, at 9 a.m. Other merchants along the parade route are encouraged to join in this post-parade clean-up. To volunteer, please call Kristin Littlefield at 845-5642.

This effort marks the St. Patrick’s Day Parade’s second annual association with the Newport Energy and Environment Commission and the City of Newport as a sustainable event partner. All sustainable event partners seek to mitigate their environmental footprint by employing sustainable practices like recycling, energy conservation, energy-efficient transportation, composting and waste reduction techniques.
