Repairs Coming To Elm Street Pier In Newport In Time For Summer: City Officials
The Elm Street pier in Newport sustained significant damage because of winter storms in December and January.

NEWPORT, RI — Repairs to the Elm Street pier in Newport are expected to be complete in time for summer, according to city officials.
After a portion of the pier was heavily damaged during the onslaught of winter storms back in December and January, city officials have issued a request for proposal (RFP) to allow the popular Point Pier to be reopened in less than a month.
City officials said if all goes well, the pier should be open by July 1 for passive recreational use. If voters pass the infrastructure bond in November's election, more work will b done to allow more recreational activities by next summer.

As outlined in the RFP, the plan is to deconstruct the unstable outer portion of the pier and add an extended floating dock and a series of swim ladders to allow easier and safer recreational access in and out of the water.
