Rhode Island Ties Record For Coldest March 28

It's been nearly a century since it was this cold in Providence this late in the month.

RHODE ISLAND — After a few weeks of sunshine and springlike temperatures, a polar vortex dipped down from Canada Monday, bringing a shock of wintry air to Southern New England. It's been close to a century since it's been that cold in Rhode Island this late in the month, according to the National Weather Service.

Monday's high temperature of 34 degrees tied the record for the lowest high temperature on record for March 28 set all the way back in 1926, the NWS said.

Providence wasn't the only city to see close to record cold Monday: Boston tied its record of 33 degrees set in 1893, while Worcester broke its 1966 record by one degree at a chilly high of 27 degrees.
