RI's Largest Hospital Group Names New CEO
John Fernandez will replace Timothy Babineau, who stepped down on May 31 after 10 years at the helm of Lifespan.

RHODE ISLAND — Boston hospital executive John Fernandez will replace Timothy Babineau as the president and CEO of Lifespan, Rhode Island's largest hospital group, a company spokesperson said in a news release Friday.
Fernandez is currently the president of Mass Eye and Ear, as well as Mass General Brigham Integrated Care. He is expected to begin at Lifespan in early 2023, following a unanimous vote from the company's board of directors.
He replaces Babineau, who stepped down on May 31 after 10 years at the helm of Lifespan.

"These are unprecedented times in healthcare, and we need a transformative leader who has the vision and expertise to guide Lifespan’s future strategic direction," said Lawrence Aubin, chairman of Lifespan's board of directors. "All the candidates were exceptional and came from major academic medical centers in extremely competitive markets, but John Fernandez stood out as the leader that Lifespan needs during this time."
A spokesperson for Lifespan said Fernandez will "guide Lifespan's strategic direction." This includes building upon "its already strong quality and safety program, and focus on Lifespan’s ambulatory footprint to make sure patients receive the best possible care in the most appropriate setting."

Fernandez spent 16 years at Mass Eye and Ear, and previously served as vice president at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He has a bachelor's degree in political science from The College of Wooster in Ohio. He also has a master's degree in government administration from the University of Pennsylvania.
Lifespan owns Rhode Island Hospital, Hasbro Children's Hospital, Newport Hospital and The Miriam Hospital.
