Simple Assault Charged after Slapping Episode

Police charged a 35-year-old Newport woman on Sunday for the incident outside the Meeting Street shelter.

Newport police charged a 35-year-old Newport woman with simple assault on Sunday for allegedly slapping another woman multiple times outside the homeless shelter on Meeting Street.

Police said Shana J. Brady, of 15 Meeting St., allegedly walked up to the other woman standing outside of the shelter and started yelling at her.

When the victim tried to walk away, Brady started slapping her.

Police said another person at the scene witnessed the incident and Brady was arrested without incident a short time later. Police said they spotted her walking on Broadway and she blurted out “I didn’t hit her” when police asked about the incident.

Police said Brady was arraigned and released later that afternoon and is due to appear in court on Dec. 9.
