Newport: SUV Crashes Into Armory

An accident on the second level of the Wyndham parking garage sent one patient to the hospital.

NEWPORT, RI — Medics took a woman to the hospital Monday morning after an accident that started in the parking garage at the Wyndham Inn On the Harbor. Witnesses said the Sport Utility Vehicle was on the garage's second floor level when it crashed through the steel barrier. According to Lt. Allan Gray, of the Newport Fire Department, the SUV then dropped 15 feet, landed upright in the road on the Ann Street Pier, and slammed into the side of the Armory.

Rescue workers arrived around 11:20 a.m. and found the car sitting on all four tires. The SUV's front end was crumpled, but the air bag had deployed. The driver was taken by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital, he said. No word about her condition. The Newport police closed down the area while maintenance workers repositioned the steel railings, he said. The second deck will remain shut down on orders of the deputy fire chief until Tuesday morning when crews will secure Jersey barriers for safety.

The Armory was not damaged, he said.
