Warren Man Carkjacks 2 Vehicles Minutes After Stopping By Newport PD: Cops
The Warren man carjacked two vehicles, crashing both of them, police said.
NEWPORT, RI — A Warren man pulled into the Newport Police Department parking lot Monday morning and complained of "experiencing an emergency," then took off and proceeded to carjack a pair of vehicles before he was ultimately apprehended following a crash in Massachusetts, police said.
Jaron Monroe, 37, showed up in the parking lot about 7:45 a.m. and "reported he was experiencing an emergency, though he advised it was not medical in nature," the Newport Police Department said in a media release.
"Officers responded to speak with Monroe, who remained inside his running vehicle with the windows only partially lowered," the release said, noting that "Monroe appeared to be suffering from a mental health crisis."

The officers asked Monroe to shut off his vehicle and step out but he instead locked the doors and drove off, according to the release.

Then, about 10 minutes later, "Monroe committed an armed carjacking in the Shaw’s parking lot located at 71 East Main Road in Middletown," the release said.
"The victims reported that their white Jeep SUV was stolen by the suspect via gunpoint as they were idling in front of the store," the Middletown Police Department said in a media release.

"The suspect fled the scene in the stolen vehicle," the Middletown release said. "The victims were not physically injured."
A short time later Monroe crashed into the rotary median at J.T. Connell Highway and Admiral Kalbfus Road in Newport, according to the Newport release.
"He exited the vehicle while waving a handgun and threatening bystanders," the release said. "Monroe then fled on foot."

But he was not on foot for long, according to the Newport police, as "Moments later, Monroe committed a second armed carjacking in the Admiralty Housing Complex parking lot at 195 Admiral Kalbfus Road."
Monroe "approached a mother and her 9-year-old daughter inside a gray Toyota SUV, pointed a firearm at them, and ordered them out of the vehicle," the Newport release said.
"Mother and daughter complied," the release said. "Monroe then fled the scene in the stolen Toyota.

Within less than an hour, Monroe had made his way to Somerset, Massachusetts, where he crashed once again, according to the release, but this time was captured by police.
"A handgun was recovered at the time of his arrest," the release said.
Charges are currently being filed, and Monroe remains in custody in Massachusetts," according to the release.
