Woonsocket kids offering food for donations of pet care items.

The Woonsocket Boys and Girls Club is offering dynamites from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, at their club at 72 Kendrick Ave. in exhange for donations of pet care items for local shelter animals.

The items they're looking for include cat and dog food, office supplies, old towels and comforters, Timothy hay (for animal bedding), soft dog and cat treats and cat beds for the Providence Animal Rescue League.

The fundraiser is a welcome sign of city youths' good deeds and warm hearts, said Bonnie Piekarski, a Pre Teen Program staff member at the club. "It shows some children in the Woonsocket area doing positive community service instead of all the negative light that is often associated with the youth in the community," she said.

Locally, "Money is tight, of course," said Woonsocket Animal Control Officer Doris Kay at the Woonsocket Animal Shelter.

She said they are in special need of dog food, pet treats, leashes (stray dogs are placed with their leashes, and owners often don't bring leashes when they retrieve their pets), squirrel traps and cat traps.

Kay said she often needs cat traps to remove wild cats from buildings, or for skunks. The best bait for the traps is cat food. "The smelliest kind you can get," she said.
