The lights will be activated in a blinking mode starting today, (blinking “yellow” on Cumberland Street and blinking “red” on Kendrick Avenue) and will remain set this way for the next two weeks. The lights will then be changed over to operate based on traffic exiting Kendrick Avenue and/or activation by pedestrians wishing to cross the streets.
Debroisse asked drivers to take notice of the new system. Until the lights are operating based on traffic, motorists should yield the right of way, slow down or stop, if warranted, to yield for a pedestrian crossing the roadway within the crosswalk, according to a release from the DPW.

The grant also provided upgrades to the intersection at Second Avenue and Olo Street, near Sacred Heart Catholic Church, to make it safer for kids while they're waiting to cross through. That intersection was showcased in October when Miss Rhode Island visited Coleman School for Walk to School Day.
