Woonsocket Police Investigating Suspicious Death on Fairfield Avenue

WOONSOCKET, RI—City police are investigating the suspicious death of a 78-year-old woman in a Fairfield Avenue home.

Police established a presence at the house at 191 Fairfield Ave. on Wednesday morning after a well-being check led to the discovery of the woman's body.

According to reports, someone in the neighborhood peered inside the window and saw the woman inside under a mattress. The house appeared to have been ransacked.

Police confirmed that they are treating the death as suspicious and the cause of death has not been determined by the state medical examiner's office, though it does not appear she died of natural causes.

Police said it appears to be an isolated incident.
