Man Threatening To Jump Off Ledge In Springfield Saved By Crisis Team

A man experiencing a mental health crisis on the top of a parking garage at Springfield Town Center Wednesday was safely taken into custody.

SPRINGFIELD, VA — Members of the Fairfax County Police Department's Crisis Negotiation Team on Wednesday successfully persuaded a man, who had been threatening to jump from a parking garage roof at Springfield Town Center, to step down, according to police.

Shortly after 3 p.m. on Wednesday, officers from the FCPD's Franconia District responded to a suicidal man ready to jump from the roof of a parking garage at the shopping center, police said.

Officers engaged the man in conversation to calm him down, which bought time for additional resources, including the police department's crisis negotiators and co-responder units, to respond. Negotiators spoke with the man for more than five hours and were able to convince him to step off of the ledge, according to police

By early Wednesday evening, the man was taken into custody and is receiving services, police said.
