Lynchburg is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Lynchburg has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.
A few things to know:
- Lynchburg is home to a piece of Civil War history, the Old City Cemetery. Established in 1806, it is the oldest municipal cemetery in Virginia still being used today, and it serves as the final resting place for roughly 20,000 people.
- The city boasts a unique geological feature known as the Natural Bridge. Located nearby, this natural arch carved out of limestone by Cedar Creek was deemed a National Historic Landmark in 1988.
- The Lynchburg Community Market, dating back to 1783, is one of the oldest farmers' markets in the country and a centerpiece of Lynchburg's downtown. A lively gathering spot that showcases the spirit and flavor of the Lynchburg community, visitors can explore a vibrant array of fresh produce, handmade crafts and delicious culinary treats.
- Lynchburg's Monument Terrace pays homage to the city's veterans, with a staircase that winds from Church Street to Court Street. It boasts monuments and plaques commemorating the brave individuals who served — a powerful tribute and a must-visit for those looking to honor and reflect on the sacrifices made for freedom.
- Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson’s personal retreat, is located just outside Lynchburg. This architectural masterpiece — and National Historic Landmark — was designed by Jefferson himself as a place of solitude and reflection, offering a unique glimpse into the life of one of America’s Founding Fathers.
