📰 News we're reading

1. Milwaukee hit-and-run: Man seriously injured, woman charged (fox6now.com) — A Milwaukee woman is charged in a downtown hit-and-run that left a rideshare driver in a coma with severe head injuries. Prosecutors say surveillance video, debris, and an allegedly false online police report tied a damaged Jeep Compass to the Dec. 1 crash near Van Buren and Juneau, leading to felony charges and a $20,000 cash bond.

2. Community leader of the year: Chad Bauman (biztimes.com subscription) — Milwaukee Rep executive director Chad Bauman is being honored for leading the $80 million rebuild of the downtown Associated Bank Theater Center, now drawing diverse audiences and students. Despite pandemic setbacks, flooding at a Wauwatosa facility, and tight funding, the revitalized complex is open, thriving, and positioned as a major cultural and economic hub for Milwaukee’s future.

3. Wisconsin's free clinics fill gaps in health care (gazettextra.com) — Free clinics like Milwaukee’s Bread of Healing are bracing for a surge in uninsured patients as federal premium tax credits are set to expire and ACA marketplace rates jump. Staff at three Milwaukee locations and other Wisconsin clinics describe rising demand, tight budgets, and efforts to expand capacity so low-income residents can still access medical, dental, and behavioral care without being turned away.

4. Milwaukee Jewish community to honor those killed in Australia terror attack at Hanukkah event (tmj4.com) — Chabad of Milwaukee is dedicating its Hanukkah Festival and Gelt Drop at Bayshore Mall in Glendale to the memory of Rabbi Eli Schlanger and other victims of the Sydney terror attack, while boosting security and sharing symbolic lights and charity. Jewish organizations across southeast Wisconsin are also urging residents to stand against antisemitism and honor the holiday with resilience and community.
