What Did Your Congressman's Seat Cost?

Rep. Jared Huffman won election to the U.S. House of Representatives last fall, now representing Northern California for his first term.

But how much did his House seat cost him?

When we asked this question on Facebook, one reader responded idealistically:

"I voted for him for free," said JD on San Anselmo Fairfax Patch Facebook.

Though you can't buy a vote, a campaign does cost money. In terms of dollars and cents, Huffman raised $1,449,962 during the 2012 election cycle, according to MapLight, a non-profit that tracks money in politics.

That figure is pretty typical: the average House member raised $1,689,580, or $2,315 a day, according to MapLight.
