SANDY SPRINGS, GA — Demolition on a Georgia 400 overpass will close part of a major Sandy Springs road this weekend and for several weekends to follow.

Abernathy Road will be closed at the junction with the State Route from 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25 to 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 28, the Georgia Department of Transportation says. Closure to Abernathy at that location will follow the same weekend schedule through March 21, officials said.

The same stretch of road will close nightly from 9 p.m. through 5 a.m. during weeknights through March 18, according to GDOT. These dates are subject to change based upon scheduling and weather conditions.

The closures are part of the Transform 285/400 project which, at this particular junction, create a Divergent Diamond Interchange similar to the nearby Ashford Dunwoody Road overpass at I-285.

When the work is completed, drivers traveling east on Abernathy Road will be guided into opposite lanes for access to the Georgia 400 North onramp before merging back to the regular side, while westbound motorists will be guided into opposite lanes for continuous flow onto southbound Georgia 400, according to GDOT plans.

In the meantime, drivers exiting Georgia 400 both southbound and northbound will only be able to make right turns onto Abernathy Road until the demolition period ends.
