Here are the top three stories today in Sandy Springs:
- Sandy Springs City Council commemorated local veterans on Purple Heart Day, recognizing those wounded or killed in combat. Mayor Rusty Paul proclaimed Aug. 7 as Purple Heart Day and honored veterans, including District 5 Councilman Tibby DeJulio, who served in the U.S. Army Infantry during the Vietnam War. This marks the seventh year that Sandy Springs has observed Purple Heart Day, with Mayor Paul acknowledging it as a small yet meaningful gesture for the veterans' sacrifices. (Appen Media)
- A deceased man was discovered floating in a retention pond along Roswell Road in Sandy Springs on Sunday around 3:00 p.m. The Sandy Springs Police, along with the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office, is conducting an investigation into the case. The identity and cause of death of the man remain unknown, and further details have not been provided by the police. (Sandy Springs Patch)
- An inmate named Christopher Smith, aged 34, passed away at Fulton County Jail. The detention officer discovered him unresponsive in a medical unit cell, and despite attempts to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital. Smith had been incarcerated for over three years, awaiting trial for charges including violation of street gang terrorism, cruelty to children, and armed robbery. This year, he is one of six inmates who have died in Fulton County custody, prompting the Department of Justice to investigate living conditions, medical care, and use of force in the jail. (WSB-TV)
