Sandy Springs residents Paul & Arlene Samuels, 79 and 81, are making sure they stay active. They are announcing their latest adventure, publishing their coauthored book Mental Health Meltdown, illuminating the voices of bipolar and other mental illnesses. Their book captures 30 plus first-person stories of those who live with various mental health challenges and those who love and support them.

They welcome opportunities to share their book and firsthand experiences of navigating a mental illness by speaking at various book/civic clubs, churches, and other organizations. The Samuels are committed to helping others find hope and insights about mental health struggles. And a great bonus; they do not require a speaking fee locally.

Since 2007, the Samuels first lived in Roswell and now in Sandy Springs for ten years. Paul is a co-facilitator for Depression, Bipolar Support Alliance. (DBSA) Arlene is a member of Sandy Springs DAR. Paul was formerly a Real Estate Broker, instructor, and owner of three Fortune Academy Real Estate schools in Mt. Pleasant SC. Their move to Atlanta in 2007 took place when AIPAC hired Arlene as the Christian Outreach Director for the Southeast. She is currently the weekly columnist for The Christian Broadcasting Network Israel.

Married 49 years, Paul and Arlene have traveled the globe in various capacities such as World Vision and volunteers with Mercy Ships. Their marriage is an example of learning to live with Paul’s undiagnosed bipolar and finally the joy of his diagnosis enabling him to manage Bipolar. Paul describes his “giving back” as a facilitator in the peer support groups as a fulfilling way to bring hope to those diagnosed- and their families- learning to understand and live with a mental illness. Paul is also the author of five other books on Amazon: a bipolar memoir, poetry, and children’s books.
