Child Followed By Car While Walking To School, Passenger Says 'Hey': Palatine PD

Police said the incident occurred prior to the start of school Friday near Virginia Lake Elementary School.

PALATINE, IL — A car followed a child walking to school Friday morning near Virginia Lake Elementary School. According to Palatine police, the incident occurred at around 8:40 a.m. in the 900 block of N. Stark Street. The child is safe.

A dark SUV-type vehicle, possibly similar to a Dodge Durango or Ford Explorer, reportedly followed the student. A passenger in the vehicle — described as a white or Hispanic man in his 20s, with a thin build, facial hair, and dark-layered clothing — called out "hey" from across the street, but did not approach the student. The driver, a male wearing dark clothing, remained in the vehicle.

"We encourage families to speak with children about personal safety — avoiding interaction with strangers, walking in groups, and reporting suspicious activity immediately," Palatine police said.
