Dog Dies After Falling Into Malden River In Everett: FD
Officials shared new warnings after the incident about the dangers of thin ice throughout the region.
EVERETT, MA — A dog died earlier this week after it fell through ice on the Malden River in Everett, the Everett Fire Department said.
The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon around 4 p.m., according to the fire department. Firefighters on scene put on survival suits and waded into the river to retrieve the dog, officials said.
Crews were standing by on shore to try to resuscitate the dog. Efforts, the Everett Fire Department said, though, were unsuccessful.

“Though the outcome was not the one we hoped for, members of the Everett Fire Department, Everett Police Department and Cataldo Ambulance went above and beyond to attempt to save the dog's life and should be proud of their efforts,” the fire department said in a message on Facebook.
This incident in Everett this week was the latest in a line of recent incidents on icy area bodies of water in places including Winchester and Lexington, as reported by NBC Boston.

Officials and agencies from the National Weather Service to individual fire departments separately shared warnings in recent days about the dangers of thin ice.
Even before recent warmer weather, ice around Greater Boston this week was largely not thick enough to support the weight of a person standing on it, officials said.
“The local bodies of water appear to be frozen enough to walk on by people and dogs alike,” the Everett Fire Department said on Wednesday. “It is not safe for anyone to walk on the ice.”
