Marlborough Middle School Students Help Hurricane Victims
Whitcomb students drew and sold postcards to help victims of Hurricane Harvey.
MARLBOROUGH, MA—World events, even when tied to tragedy, can often be used as a learning tool in the classroom. Such is the case with the students and teachers at the Whitcomb Middle School in Marlborough, who discussed the tragedy of Hurricane Harvey. They also brainstormed about ways to help.
Whitcomb art teachers Evonne Avalos, Karissa Goad, Tobias Irving and students honored the heroes of Hurricane Harvey by creating and selling colorful postcards. Students in grades 5-7 created more than 300 postcards, which were colorful and heartfelt works of art displayed during curriculum night. A minimum donation of $1 was requested, and all the cards were bought be families and teachers to help the hurricane victims.
Grade 5 English and Social Studies teacher Nancy Beshansky also worked with the homeroom teachers to coordinate a fun, competitive “Quarter Drive."

The students raised more than $1,100 with all proceeds going to Feeding Texas, an organization that supports victims of Hurricane Harvey by providing hot meals, non-perishable items and other necessities. Donations can be sent to their address at 1524 South I H 35 #342, Austin, TX 78704.
“Watching Whitcomb come together to help families in Texas is a true sign of community, and I couldn’t be prouder of our students and teachers for their efforts and making a difference,” Brian Daniels, principal of Whitcomb School, said in a statement.
