Students prepped questions for the mayor and the superintendent.

MARLBOROUGH, MA— On Friday, Oct. 6, Mayor Vigeant and Superintendent Greulich visited 8th graders in Mr. Massicotte's 8th grade English class to discuss the role of government, civic leadership, and the opportunities and challenges that face the City of Marlborough, according to an announcement from the Marlborough Public Schools.

Students prepped questions for the mayor and the superintendent, which consisted of transportation, the new school building, the hospital, bus service, street improvements, the new bike program and more.

"If I don't know about the issues, I can't fix them," said Vigeant in a statement.

This visit is in conjunction with an annual statewide essay (for eighth graders) and poster contest (for third graders) sponsored by the Massachusetts Municipal Association (MMA). The contest is designed to raise public awareness and promote the equalities of good local government and to encourage students to think creatively about civic leadership, said the announcement.

Massicotte, 8th grade ELA teacher, is encouraging all his students to enter this essay contest (deadline is Nov. 10). Students of the winning essays will be recognized during the MMA's Annual Meeting and Trade Show in Boston on Jan. 19-20. The first-place winner of the essay contest will receive a $500 cash prize and be invited to read their essay at the opening dinner. Contest details can be found here.
