NEWTON, MA — Mason-Rice Elementary School was named one of the best public elementary schools in the state, according to a new ranking Tuesday from U.S. News & World Report.

Mason-Rice came in at number 15 in the rankings. The school comprises approximately 330 students from kindergarten to fifth grade. Its current location on 149 Pleasant St. was built in 1959 after the Mason and Rice schools combined.

U.S. News researchers based the 2026 ranking of the nation’s best public elementary schools on publicly available data from the U.S. Department of Education. Elementary schools are considered either pre-K-5 or pre-K-6 in the analysis. For schools that have a wider grade span, only tests through fifth grade were considered.
