Newton Increasing EV Charging Rates In The New Year
The city's ChargePoint charging stations will have a new standard price come January.
NEWTON, MA — Electric vehicle charging will soon become more expensive in Newton.
The charging price will increase from 20 cents per kilowatt hour to 30 on Friday, Jan. 2, 2026, Mayor Ruthanne Fuller announced. She cited the increase was necessary due to the increasing cost of electricity and in order to provide maintenance on the seven public ChargePoint stations that are located throughout the city. This increase will mark the first since 2016 when the charging stations and rates were first implemented.
“Our estimate is that our chargers currently cost the City between 28 cents/kWh and 33 cents/kWh for electricity,” Fuller said. “Our costs vary by site, in part because the amount of electricity the chargers use overall influences what rate class they are in and the ‘demand charge’ imposed.”
