Newton Police Log: Marijuana Possession; Thieves Run Off with 26 Pairs of Flip Flops; Man Attempts to Steal Pineapple Vodka

The following are excerpts from Newton crime reports. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Newton thieves seem to be dreaming of warmer places lately as recent police reports include claims that a man and woman stole 26 pairs of flip flops and another man attempted to take two bottles of pineapple vodka.

Though we’re all looking forward to some sun, other crime reports aren’t quite so tropical.

Friday, Feb. 20:

  • Police responded to reports that a man and woman stole 26 pairs of flip flops from drawer near the entrance of Banana Republic on Feb. 13. Suspects were described as a white woman in her 30s with blond hair and a thin build and a white man in his 30s with dark hair, approximately 6 feet tall and a thin build.
  • Police responded to reports of shoplifting at Wegmans, 200 Boylston St. Employees said a black man in his 30s, wearing women’s white pants and a blue parka jacket, slipped two bottles of pineapple vodka into a red duffle bag. He was chased out of the store by security and dropped his bag on the way out. The bag he left behind contained a broken vodka bottle, condoms and a hammer.
  • Two Newton residents reported their trash bins were stolen from outside their homes.

  • A woman reported a phone scam. A man claiming to be Captain Arthur O’Neill of the American Embassy in Mexico called her and told her her grandson was in jail. He asked her to purchase three $500 gift cards and to call him with the numbers at (514) 464-5613. She gave him the numbers. The man called again later that night and told her that her grandson had been caught with marijuana and it would cost her another $900 in a moneygram to bail him out. The woman sent the moneygram. Police were able to stop payment on the moneygram, but the gift cards had already been used at a Quantum Health and Medical Dental Lab in Louisiana.
  • Two jackets and one handbag were reported stolen from three women.
  • Police arrested Emeli Kwasi Attipoe, 36, for driving with a suspended license.

Sunday, Feb. 22:

  • Police responded to reports of suspicious activity. A woman smoking outside of Home Goods said a man and his son approached her and started asking her questions. She described the man as in his 60s, missing teeth and wearing a black jacket and tan pants.
  • A man reported that someone stole his Toro Power Clear 21 Snow Blower from the back of his pickup truck while it was parked in his driveway. The snow blower has a broken key switch and two wires hanging from the bottom.
  • A woman reported her roof rake stolen from the garage in the back of her house. There were no signs of forced entry.
  • Police arrested Carl M. Pomerance, 25, for possession of marijuana. Pomerance was allegedly caught causing a scene at Union Street Bar and Grill. Police said he reeked of liquor and alcohol, and was shouting profanities and resisted arrest.
