Newton’s New Philharmonia Orchestra Opens 28th Season

The program, "Latin & Slavic Colors," kicks off on Nov. 20 and features works based on folk music of the region.

NEWTON, AM — New Philharmonia Orchestra, Newton’s symphony, will open its 28th season on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 3 pm at Newton North High School Auditorium.

The program, “Latin & Slavic Colors,” features works based on folk music of the region, including composers from Latin America as well as Dvorak.

New Phil’s Principal Conductor, Jorge Soto will conduct the concert. A native of Venezuela, Soto has been in the United States for more than 20 years and is well known in the area for both his conducting and his teaching.

The soloist for the concert will classical guitarist Zaira Meneses, who will perform Guitar Concerto by Hector Villa-Lobos. Meneses, a native of Mexico, has been living in Newton for more than 20 years and has contributed broadly to the area’s cultural scene by performing music of her native land and other Latin American countries.
