NEWTON, MA — Marc Laredo appears to be on his way to the Mayor's office, according to unofficial results from Tuesday's election.

Laredo defeated Albert Cecchinelli Jr. in a race that was not particularly close, with Laredo receiving 17,494 to Cecchinelli's 3,044. Laredo is now slated to succeed Ruthanne Fuller, who chose not to run for reelection after serving seven years in the position.

Laredo will now transition from City Council President to Mayor. He also has seven years of experience on the School Committee.

A 90-year-old parking ordinance appears to be sticking around after a ballot question to overturn it failed by a slim margin. Since 1936, overnight street parking has been banned in the city in some capacity. The current ban does not allow any on-street parking from Dec. 1 through April 1 between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. 71 votes narrowly shot down a vote to repeal that ban. 10,894 voted "no" to keep the ordinance in place while 10,823 voted "yes."

Residents Peter Klapes and Jeremy Freudberg led the charge to acquire enough signatures so the question could appear on the ballot.
