5 Somerville Nonprofits To Support This Holiday Season
Somerville has a diverse group of charities that could use additional support.
SOMERVILLE, MA — If you’re like many of your Somerville neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.
Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.
Maintaining funding is a constant challenge for many nonprofits that fill gaps and meet other needs in the Somerville area.
Here are five local nonprofits to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday:

- Somerville Homeless Coalition: The Coalition works to assist those who are dealing with the challenges of homelessness, food insecurity, and eviction with specific, personalized services and housing solutions. The organization has assisted hundreds of households through its case management.
- Hearts of Life Food Pantry: Hearts of Life was founded in 2009 by Vida Real Internacional Pastor Luis Morales, and now has 100 volunteers whose efforts have been felt on an international level. Its Somerville location can be found on 404 Broadway.
- The Welcome Project: The Project is Somerville's leading immigrant organization, and was founded in 1987. It offers youth and adult programs that teach the English language, as well as concepts such as culture and identity.
- Arts at the Armory: The Somerville Center for The Arts at the Armory operates the Performance Hall, ROOTED Cafe, and The Lavendar Room in Armory on 191 Highland Ave. It is platform for local musicians and artists to share their talents with the community.
- Groundwork Somerville, Inc.: The local branch of Groundwork USA can be found on Somerville Avenue. The group creates connections with businesses and individuals to teach environmentally-friendly practices.
