SOMERVILLE, MA — An annual holiday tradition at the Somerville Theatre has been cut short this year due to COVID-19.

"The Slutcracker" announced Monday it is canceling the remainder of its 2021 shows, days after a COVID-19 exposure forced the cancelation of one of its performances. According to a statement on the show's Facebook page, the Saturday performance was canceled, but the show decided to move forward with an alternate cast on Sunday.

It opted not to continue with the rest of the season "after much deliberation," according to an announcement on Facebook.

"We did not take this decision lightly, and we apologize greatly for the cancelations," the statement continued. "The safety of our cast, crew, theater staff and audiences are just too important to make any other choice at this time."

A raunchy parody of the holiday staple "The Nutcracker," the show has garnered national attention from ABC Nightline and The Washington Post, and is considered a Boston Globe top pick, according to its website.
