Why Is Stop & Shop Still Supporting Extreme Animal Cruelty?

It's time for our hometown grocer to fulfill its promise of selling 100% cage-free eggs.

Growing up in Quincy and now living in Somerville, I’ve always seen Stop & Shop as more than just a grocery store—it’s a fixture in our community. Like many of my neighbors, I was proud when the company promised to sell only cage-free eggs by 2025. But now, with that deadline having passed, Stop & Shop has yet to follow through.

Instead of keeping its word, Stop & Shop continues to stock eggs from hens confined in tiny, overcrowded cages. These birds are unable to spread their wings, nest, or engage in natural behaviors—conditions that cause both physical and psychological suffering.

For a company headquartered in nearby Quincy, this isn’t just a corporate issue—it’s a local one. When Stop & Shop fails to uphold ethical commitments, it lets down the very community that has supported it for generations. I want to feel good about shopping at my neighborhood grocery store, but it’s hard to trust a brand that isn’t honoring its promises.
