2. ACTON PARADE INFORMATION: The parade will step off from Acton-Boxborough Region High School at 10am. The parade will march up Main Street and stop at the town common where an abbreviated ceremony will be held. The parade will then continue down Concord Road and arrive at Woodlawn Cemetery, at which point the main ceremony will take place.

3. SUDBURY CELEBRATION INFORMATION: Following the parade, which starts at the Rugged Bear Plaza and heads up Concord Road, the Sudbury Historical Commission welcomes the public to its Memorial Day Open House at the historic Hosmer House. A display in the parlor will recognize the efforts of town employees, school employess and volunteers on town committees who have passed away this year.

The Ballroom will feature a military display sponsored by the Scott Milley VFW organization, presented by Peter Harvell.

Visit the wonderful collection of paintings by Florence Hosmer throughout the house and enjoy refershments in the old store room.

The house will be open from 10 am until 1 pm, so stop in before or after the parade. Free admission.

4. ODD HOLIDAYS HELD TODAY: Yes, it is Memorial Day. But did you know it's also Sun Screen Day? This day educates and brings awareness to the importance of using sunscreens to protect yourself and your children from harmful UV rays from the sun. This day is held on May 27, just in advance of the summer and vacation season.

5. THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

  • 1647 — The first recorded execution of a witch reportedly took place in Massachusetts when Achsah Young was hanged.
  • 1703 — St. Petersburg was founded by Czar Peter the Great.
  • 1936 — The Queen Mary left England on its maiden voyage, arriving in France four hours later.
  • 1937 — Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco opened.
  • 1941 — British ships sank the German battleship Bismarck off the coast of France, resulting in the loss of 2,300 lives.
  • 1994 — Nobel-prize winning dissident, Alexandr Solzhenitsyn returned to Russia after 20 years in exile.
  • 1996 — After a year and a half of bloodshed, Russian President Boris Yeltsin met with the leader of the Chechen rebels and negotiated a cease-fire.
  • 1999 — Slobodan Milosevic was indicted by the International War Crimes Tribunal at the Hague for crimes against humanity.
