Two Watertown Athletes Honored During Mass. Celebration of Girls in Sports Day

Alyssa Carlson and Brenna McDonald headed into Boston to be part of the annual celebration.

Two Watertown High School students joined hundreds of other female athletes at Faneuil Hall on Friday to be a part of the Massachusetts Celebration of Girls and Women in Sports Day. 

Alyssa Carlson, who plays field hockey, ice hockey and lacrosse, and Brenna McDonald, a soccer, ice hockey and lacrosse player, were chosen to attend the annual event, which this year has a theme of "Girls in Sports: An Investment in the Future."

Carlson and McDonald received a certificate during the morning's celebration, as did two girls from each participating high school.

Amy Latimer, TD Garden President, presented the keynote speech at the event co-sponsored by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) and the New Agenda: Northeast.

  • Three 2013 recipients of the Massachusetts Women in Athletics Distinguished Service Award: Mary Burke, Lacrosse Coach, Medway High School; Tara Morano, Athletic Trainer and Physical Education Educator, Middleborough High School, and Ann Simons, Field Hockey Coach, Longmeadow High School.
  • Three GWS Essay Award winners: Bryn Miller, Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School, first place; Addie Egan, Westborough High School, second place, and Sarah Lagan, Natick High School, third place; Sylvie Rose Stoloff, Boston Latin School, and Emma Caviness, Nashoba Regional High School, both Honorable Mention.

National Girls and Women in Sport Day (NGWSD) began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to assure equality for women's sports, according to a release from the MIAA. Hyman died of Marfan's Syndrome in 1986.
