Watertown Police Log: Stolen ATM Card Used Several Times, Checks Cashed Illegally

Arrests
May 8, 9:09 p.m.: Security at Stop & Shop on Watertown Street spotted a man concealing groceries and when they confronted him he dropped the items and ran out the door, said Watertown Police Sgt. Thomas Grady. The items were worth $70.16. Police later located him on Pleasant Street and placed him under arrest. Matthew Edward Zappala, 30, of 138R Main Street in Watertown, was arrested in on a charge of shoplifting by asportation.
May 12, 6:15 p.m.: Target security spotted two people taking clothing off the rack, removing hangers and putting them inside their bags, Grady said. The bag was then put under a stroller. One of the girls then tried to leave without paying for items worth $275.11, Grady said. A 16-year-old girl from Newton was arrested for shoplifting of more than $100 by asportation.

May 6, 1:18 p.m.: A Cambridge woman realized that her account was overdrawn and when she looked into it she found that two checks had been cashed, but she had not written them and she still had the checks, Grady said. The checks had been cashed on May 1 at Target in Watertown, Grady said.
May 7, 8:04 p.m.: A woman was caught putting items in her clothing and her bag while she was at Stop & Shop on Watertown Street, and was found with $83.45 of items on her, Grady said. The woman was removed from the store and was summonsed to Waltham District Court on a charge of shoplifting by concealment, Grady said.
May 8, 6:11 a.m.: A Cadillac parked in a driveway on Fairfield Street was broken into and someone went through the glove box and center console, but nothing appeared to be taken, Grady said. The car had been left unlocked.
May 8, 8:09 a.m.: Two mountain bikes and a BMX bike were reported taken from a home on School Street on May 8, Grady said. They turned up at noon the same day and were returned to the owners.
May 8, 9:31 a.m.: A Volvo was broken into on Langdon Avenue, and a GPS device and a wallet were taken from the car, Grady said. Police are investigating.
May 8, 4:37 p.m.: The owner of a 2001 Volvo parked at a meter in front of Dunkin Donuts on Mt. Auburn Street came back to the car and found that the antenna had been broken, Grady said.
May 9, 8:38 a.m.: A Chauncey Street resident reported that someone broke into their car and took a Yamaha saxophone worth $500, Grady said.
May 10, 9:35 p.m.: A woman came into get her nails done at Victoria Nails on Main Street and after she was done she lingered. The salon owner later got a call from Sovereign Bank saying that her ATM card had been used multiple times, Grady said. Police are working with the bank on the investigation.
May 11, 10:09 a.m.: A Coolidge Avenue resident reported that someong had entered a 2008 Subaru and $300 worth of arts and crafts supplies and a Boston parking pass were taken, Grady said.
May 11, 11:07 p.m.: A man was found dead in his car parked in a lot on North Beacon Street. The death appeared to be due to a medical emergency, Grady said.
May 12, 2:48 a.m.: A Top Cab driver said he drove two men to Derby Road and when they arrived the two men ran away from the cab and did not pay the $29 fare, Grady said.
