Flash Flood Watch Until 10 a.m. Tuesday; Jersey City Flood Zones

While parts of NJ are under a watch only until 5 a.m. Tuesday, the watch extends to 10 a.m. for Hudson.

JERSEY CITY, NJ — A flash flood watch is in effect from 2 p.m. Monday until 10 a.m. Tuesday for Hudson County.

While some may consider flash floods just an inconvenience, these floods have proved fatal to drivers (sometimes trapping parents and children) and people near even small streams.

Jersey City has 14 "repeat flooding" intersections throughout the city identified by the Jersey City’s Municipal Utilities Authority. During heavy rains and flooding, drivers and residents should use extra caution and avoid the intersections when possible.

3) Kellogg Street & Route 440 (DOT Drainage)
4) Westside Avenue & Audubon Avenue
5) Fisk Street & Route 440 (DOT Drainage)
6) Culver Avenue & Route 440 (DOT Drainage)
7) Grove Street Between Jersey City & Hoboken
8) Marin Blvd Between Jersey City & Hoboken
9) Merseles Street & Wayne Street
10) Center Street & Bright Street
11) Clendenny Avenue & Marcy Avenue
12) Richard Street just East of Garfield Avenue
13) Manholes on Montgomery Street (Florence St to Mill Rd)

The Jersey City Free Public Library canceled outdoor activities for Monday due to the impending storms:

Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines, resulting in power outages. Please report power outages and downed wires to PSEG.

  • The watch is also in effect for several other counties, but only until 5 a.m.: Sussex, Warren, Morris, Hunterdon, Somerset and Middlesex.
  • The Hudson County OEM noted, "The best chance of strong storms is north of Interstate 195 with the weather service noting in its morning forecast discussion that the heaviest rain could fall overnight ... Hot, humid weather sticks around on Tuesday and Wednesday with additional threats of heavy rain and thunderstorms, though they don't figure to be nearly as severe."
  • The OEM advises residents to secure outdoor furniture, trash cans, and lawn ornaments. Avoid known areas prone to flooding.
