1 Car Theft, 1 Attempted Theft In Summit Tuesday Night: Police

Summit Police were unable to find a man who stole a car from a resident's driveway and attempted to steal another Tuesday night.

SUMMIT, NJ — An unknown man stole a car from a resident's driveway Tuesday night and attempted to steal another, according to a Nixle alert from the Summit Police Department.

Police officers from Summit and neighboring towns were unable to locate the man who fled after an attempted car theft on Hobart Avenue. He was described as wearing a ski mask before he fled the scene.

According to an update Wednesday morning, the suspect's car was located by the Union Police Department after being crashed. Police discovered it was stolen earlier in the evening from Greenbriar Drive in Summit. The owners were unaware of the theft until they were notified by Summit Police.

The car was unlocked with the keys inside when it was stolen, and a second car in the driveway was also unlocked with the key fob in it.

Summit Police advise residents to lock their cars and remove the keys from inside.

"The safety of the entire community is impacted when you don’t," the alert said.
