Stuart Humphrey Named Union County Scholar Athlete
The senior will be heading off to Duke next year to play lacrosse.
Senior Stuart Humphrey has been a member of the Girls' Varsity Soccer, Ice Hockey and Lacrosse teams for her entire high school career earning her 12 varsity letters, all while maintaining a 4.416 GPA.
Humphrey said maintaining such a high GPA while participating in sports every season means getting very little sleep.
She also said the weekend was a time not for friends, but to catch up on homework.
Last year, Humphrey committed to playing lacrosse at Duke. She is so excited to attend the school and be a part of a new team, she said.
However, leaving Summit High School will be bittersweet, she added. Especially because she will be leaving soccer, which she has been playing her entire life.
“When I was little I thought I was going to be a professional soccer player,” Humphrey expressed.
She added that life takes you where it takes you.
Even though Humphrey has committed to play college lacrosse, she still has one final season with the girls at Summit.
“I’m really looking forward to having team wins this season,” she said. “I think we have a lot of talent.”
Humphrey is excited to see how the team performs against Top 10 in the nation teams such as Ridgewood, Chatham and Morristown, she said.
When asked about her accomplishments, Humphrey first pointed out the different successes of each team.
Such as, starting out the soccer season with a poor record and then being able to turn it around to a record of 9 to 8.

In 2012, Humphrey won the Hilltopper award twice both for soccer and lacrosse, as well as the Alfred Swick Memorial Award. She was also named the U.S. Lacrosse Academic All American for 2012 and All Watchung Division Player for Union County in Soccer for 2012.
“I think awards are humbling, but it’s just a plaque,” Humphrey said. “It’s really about the attitude and the way you play.”
She added that coach Mike Walsh always says, “Sports don’t build character, they reveal it,” and that it is something she wholeheartedly agrees with.
When Humphrey begins her career as a college athlete, she said she thinks her experience as an all year round scholar athlete at SHS will help her balance schoolwork and athletics.
“I think the hardest part about balancing it is keeping sight of what it’s all about,” she said. “That there is a goal and a light at the end of the tunnel.”
