Bergen Man Charged With Attempted Murder In Paterson Shooting

A Bergen County man was charged with attempted murder Saturday, the same day police investigated a shooting he was reportedly connected to, authorities said.
Nazir Carter, 20, of Hackensack was arrested and charged with first-degree attempted murder, unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose, and certain person not to have weapons, said Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes.
Paterson police officers were investigating a shooting that occurred near Summer Street and Godwin Avenue Saturday. They heard gunfire near where they were and found a 23-year-old Paterson man with a non-fatal gunshot wound, Valdes said.

The victim was taken to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson, and the police investigated. Carter was arrested based on the investigation, Valdes said.
Carter faces between 10 and 20 years in New Jersey State Prison on the first-degree murder charge, 85 percent of which must be served before he is eligible for parole, Valdes said.

The state will file a motion for pretrial detention for Carter in Superior Court, the prosecutor said.
