Ramapo varsity squads get off to winning starts Saturday
Ramapo High School kicked off its 2010 sports campaign this week, with teams quickly getting off to a winning start.

Ramapo Boys Soccer

- The boys squad opened its season Saturday morning with a 2-1 win over Fair Lawn.
The Raiders scored both of their goals in the first half of action, with Brandon Alverado and Tom Garrambone netting winners. Fair Lawn's Greg Weisman got the Cutters on the board with a goal in the second half.
Ramapo's Mike Taranto provided assists on both Raider goals, and goalie Mike DeVito turned away four Fair Lawn chances. Cutters' goalie Jeff Paer was active in keeping the Raiders away, recording nine saves.

- The freshman boys also recorded its first win in opening day action against Fair Lawn.
The Raiders beat the Cutters 7-0, with two goals each by Matt Grassi and Anthony Guaglardi. Ramapo's Chris D'Erasmo, Harry Tomczyk and Taylor Gerety rounded out the scoring.
Gerety also helped his team's cause with two assists on goals. Also recording two helpers were Mike Goskowski and Louis Rozzo, while Tomczyk provided the assist on the seventh goal. Goalies Nate Chung and Grassi kept Fair Lawn off the board.
Perhaps the goal of the game was scored by Guaglardi, who juked a defender with his back to the goal from 35 yards out, placing a shot over the goalie and under the crossbar.
- The junior varsity boys didn't fare as well, losing a tight game Saturday, 3-2 to Fair Lawn.
The Cutters got on the board first, leading 1-0 about 15 minutes into the first half. The Raiders would tie it up a few minutes later when Brandon Vega got past two defenders to squeeze in a shot past the Fair Lawn goalie. Ramapo would go into the half up 2-1, after a Michael Bird score from 18 yards out. Two other first-half scores were negated on offsides calls. Fair Lawn kept Ramapo off the scoreboard in the second half and netted two goals on corner kicks to preserve the 3-2 victory.
Ramapo Girls Soccer
- The girls squad opened their season Saturday with a convincing shutout win over Fair Lawn, 7-0.
The Raiders would net all their goals in an action-packed first half that opened with a goal just 1:46 into the season, when Jen Andresen scored on an assist from Amanda Baumgarten. The girls scored in a bunch, registering three more goals in a five-minute span midway through the first half.
Andresen would score three goals on the day, with Devon Schulte netting two and Caroline Chagaras and Kristina Totera rounding out the scoring with a goal apiece. Andresen, Totera and Schulte would provide assists on goal, as would Baumgarten and Sarah Halejian. Hallie Roccio registered two helpers.
Fair Lawn wasn't very active offensively, with Ramapo goalies Morgan Sissler and Allie Gilard each registering a lone save. Cutters goalie Kessiah Tolentino turned away 15 Ramapo chances.
Ramapo Cross Country
The Raiders ran to success Saturday, with the boys and girls defeating West Milford for a 1-0 start.
The boys, led by Chris Cohane, Andrew Wilson, Mike Mortillo, Zack Masuch and Kevin Zellers, registered a 24 to 33 margin, with the seniors taking the lead.
The girls won 20 to 35, with a freshman, Deanna DiLandro, coming through first. Seniors Emily Brown, Allie Antosy, Allisa Hammer and Morgan Repetto rounded out the scoring.
Ramapo Girls Gymnastics
- The girls competed in the Wayne Classic on Saturday, registering a team score of 98.83, good enough for second place.
On vault, Nikki Slingland scored an 8.0; Julia Klosk had an 8.4, for 12th place; Michelle Sturno qualified with an 8.3; Claire Scavone also qualified and placed ninth with her 8.45 mark; and Kristen Giacose's efforts were good enough for fifth place, with an 8.7.
On bars, Emily Hufnagel placed eighth with a 7.9; Slingland and Lauren Casey's 7.5s were good enough for 12th place; Lauren Kish scored a 7.4; and Sturno registered a 6.5.
On beam, Scavone finished fourth with an 8.9; Allie Schwab placed 12th with an 8.0; Casey qualified with an 8.1; Klosk posted a 7.2; and Anabelle Kaplan scored a 6.9.
On floor, Kish finished fifth with an 8.7; Scavone was in sixth place with a 8.625; Casey finished with an 8.1; Giacose scored a 7.4; and Hufnagel posted a 7.125.
Ramapo Football
- The freshmen squad blanked St. Joseph's of Metuchen in their season opener.
The boys won 20-0, with Connor Russo getting it done on both sides of the ball, scoring two touchdowns. Russo intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown for Ramapo's first score. The Raiders continued their strong defensive play by forcing a turnover at Joe's 1-yard line, setting up Russo for a quarterback sneak and a touchdown. The point-after attempt was blocked, leaving the Raiders ahead 13-0. The final score was provided by a 20-yard run from Jon Duma, with an extra point to extend the margin of victory to 20-0.

Ramapo Girls Tennis
- The girls tennis team also opened its season this week with a win over the Fair Lawn Cutters.
The girls, led by coach Kim Marchese, recorded a 4-1 victory over the Cutters on Tuesday at home. In singles action, the Raiders' Katie Nerlino was perfect against Shelly Cherkosky, not losing a game en route to a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Alison Nolte also recorded a total shutout, defeating Julia Geller 6-0, 6-0. However, the Raiders Lisa Jouravleva fell to the Cutters' Valerie Schlover by a 6-2, 6-2 margin.
The Raiders were dominant in doubles action, with the team of Ashley Garbaccio and Julia Friedberg defeating Samantha Altman and Suzy Simkin 6-0, 6-0. The team of Jackie Mahedy and Krisen Pizzolo gave up only a game to Jessica Perchuck and Valerie Pavlov, wining 6-0, 6-1.
