Raiders notch wins over Ridgewood squads

Ramapo and Ridgewood high schools squared off Tuesday in volleyball and soccer, with wins by the varsity squads.

Girls soccer

  • The freshmen Raiders lost a tough game at home Tuesday to the Ridgewood Maroons, 7-2.

The girls went into the game with just 11 players and no substitutes, but kept it close for the first half, going into the break down 3-2. Loren Walden and Mara Bunting scored for Ramapo, on assists from Katie McFadden.

Ridgewood would pull away in the second half, racking up four more goals to drop the freshmen Raiders to 1-1. Goalie Anna Pokrovsky had 12 saves on the afternoon.

The freshmen face Paramus Catholic and Northern Highlands next week.

  • The varsity girls also faced Ridgewood Tuesday, winning 4-3 in the final minutes.

The Raiders got goals from Jen Andresen (2), Caroline Chagares and Ariel Naftali, who put home a kick with just over two minutes to go to lift Ramapo to victory. Andresen, Maddie Dalie, Amanda Baumgarten and Sydney Cantor provided the assists, and goalie Morgan Sissler had 9 saves.

Ridgewood's Tara Porfido, Charlotte Criqui and Katie Garbarini provided the scoring, with two assists from Porfido and a helper from Garbarini. Goalie Michelle Savuto had 14 saves.

Girls volleyball

  • The varsity squad improved to 2-0 on the young season with a victory over Ridgewood Tuesday.

The girls dispatched the Maroons in straight games, 25-19, 25-21. Standout Nicole Kincade led the way for the Raiders, with 13 kills. The Maroons' Blair Fuentez nearly had as much impact, recording 12 kills on the day.

Ramapo's Erin O'Hagan provided 14 assists, while Anna Poruks tallied 9 digs. Ridgewood's Stephanie Rudd assisted on 15 scores.

The girls next travel to Wood-Ridge High School for a 4:15 p.m. start Thursday.

  • The freshmen squad also was victorious over Ridgewood Tuesday, winning in straight games, 25-21, 25-12.

The girls got off to a slow start in the first game, pulling away from a 20-20 tie to earn the win. Setter Katelyn Sala had 12 service points on the match, including four aces. Megan Gambuti and Allison Diaz each had 2 kills.

The freshmen didn't fare as well Monday, losing to Fair Lawn.

The girls were defeated in three hard fought games, 21-25, 25-19 and 19-25. Sala and Suzanne Arbribat each recorded 3 aces, while Gambuti had 3 kills.
