Wyckoff Library to Dedicate Labyrinth Saturday

The Wyckoff Public Library is one of only six public libraries listed as having a labyrinth. The public is invited to the dedication on Saturday.

The Wyckoff Public Library will officially dedicate their new labyrinth on Saturday, May 4 at 1 p.m. Matt Salisbury and library director Mary Witherell were discussing possibilities for Salisbury’s Eagle Scout Project last spring and the idea was born.

“When Matt approached me last year about doing his Eagle Scout project for the library, I thought it would be so exciting to build a labyrinth,” said Witherell. “I am a great believer in the healing and de-stressing properties of labyrinths, and they also have an amazing ability to help a walker think of solutions to problems.”

According to labyrinthlocator.org a database of more than 4,200 labyrinths in 75 countries, the Wyckoff Public Library is one of only six public libraries in the United States with its own labyrinth.

The labyrinth is 30 feet in diameter and is made of excess red brink from the library’s recent construction and donated crushed stone acquired by Salisbury.

Professional flutist Patricia Lazzara and professional harpist Kristy Chmura will be performing at the ceremony. A number of Wyckoff’s clergy will be on hand to deliver a blessing and poem about labyrinth walking by Salisbury will be read.
