Driver in Collision With Police Due in Court

Wyandanch man accused of DWI, drug possession.

A Wyandanch man accused of crashing into a Suffolk police car, injuring two officers, is due in court Thursday.

Rony Santos, 42, is facing charges of driving while intoxicated.

Police said Santos was westbound on Long Island Avenue late Saturday night when his 2000 Audi crossed over into the eastbound lane and struck a First Precinct police vehicle head on. The accident happened between Wellwood Avenue and Little East Neck Road.

One of the officers was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center in Stony Brook with a cut to his head and back and shoulder injuries. The other officer was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip and treated for back, neck and shoulder injuries.

Santos was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip for examination of minor injuries.

He also faces a charge of criminal possession of a controlled substance.

The investigation is continuing.
