Question of the Day: Preventing Boat Tragedies

Is there something the Town of Oyster Bay should do to make recreational boating safer?

Investigators are still trying to piece together the cause of the July Fourth boat accident that killed three children in Oyster Bay, but ideas are already being suggested on preventing future tragedies.

Several observers have speculated that a large wake, the wave caused my a moving boat, may have been the cause of the accident.

A suggested creating a no wake zone in Oyster Bay harbor on July Fourth and other times when area waterways might be overcrowded.

In an emotional appearance on the Today show on Friday, parents Lisa and Paul Gaines of Huntington talked about the accident, the loss of their daughter, Victoria, 7 and safety issues. Paul Gaines said, "I hate the thought of her loss of life not benefiting anybody in the future so I can’t stand the thought of something like this happening again when it’s completely avoidable on multiple levels."
