Farmingdale H.S. Takes First Place in AVATAR Contest
Team of 9 engineering students win at Northrop Grumman Innovation Challenge.
Farmingdale High School's Engineering students recently won first place at the Northrop Grumman High School Innovation Challenge.
This year’s competition "Autonomous Vehicle Avoidance, Tracking
and Rendezvous (AVATAR)"consisted of an obstacle course with hurdles of varying difficulty
The Farmingdale team of nine students included Katherine Vera, Summer Baranello, Chris Brandimarte, Bradley Koster, Kevin Chang, Rachel Danzig, Alec Szigeti and Domenic Strano. They earned the top prize of a $1,250 grant for the math, science or other appropriate department at their school.
The team's robot had three wheels which allowed it to turn much quicker than its competitors’ four wheeled creations. The robot utilized a single design with sensors that saved the team time on modifications that the other teams had to perform throughout the competition. These advantages led the team to Farmingdale’s second consecutive win in the competition.
The Farmingdale team was guided by Farmingdale Internship Coordinator Lynne Brewer and Farmingdale science teacher Robert Clark.
