Patch AM Rewind: Athletes Ready To Compete In LI Special Olympics

FARMINGDALE, NY — As many as 300 athletes will compete in several events at the Long Island Special Olympics.

It is scheduled for May 21 at Howitt Middle School in Farmingdale.

Diane Colonna, VP of Downstate Operations at Special Olympics New York, was a guest on Wednesday's "Patch AM," to preview the activities.

"Whether they're in a school program or community training club, our athletes train for, anywhere from, 8-12 weeks in their sport before a culminating event like our Spring Games or our State Games," Colonna said.

Events include track and field, aquatic, powerlifting and tennis.

Those who would like to volunteer at the games can reach out to the Special Olympics. But, equally as important, "We're always looking for fans in the stands," she said. "Having those extra people out in the stands really gives the athletes that enthusiasm and that drive. They love when people come out and cheer them on."
