The state Department of Transportation warned motorists Friday that heavy rain, flash floods, and highway and coastal flooding could create hazardous driving conditions, particularly later Friday night.

Motorists are advised to slow down and drive with extreme caution throughout the evening as the remnants of Tropical Storm Andrea pound the Farmingdale area. Rain with heavy downpours is expected overnight with areas of fog with a total of 2 to 4 inches of rain likely.

The forecast for flash flooding here comes from the National Weather Service, which issued the watch for Friday until Saturday afternoon. One-two inches of rain could fall hourly.

The totals could lead to "flash flooding of urban and poor drainage areas as well as small stream flash flooding," the weather service said.

Andrea is the first named storm of the Atlantic season.
