More than 500 athletes with intellectual disabilities are set to compete in an Olympics-style contest.

FARMINGDALE, NY — The Special Olympics Spring Games are coming to Farmingdale, the Town of Oyster Bay announced.
More than 500 athletes with intellectual disabilities, supported by more than 300 coaches, have spent months training for an Olympics-style competition, which will include track and field events. The event is slated for May 6 at the Farmingdale Athletic Complex.
"Special Olympics are an opportunity to showcase the hard work, dedication, talents, and tremendous athletic achievements of athletes, while also paving the way to eliminate social barriers and stereotypes differently-abled individuals face," Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino said in a news release. "The Town of Oyster Bay is very proud to be a partner with Special Olympics New York and the Farmingdale School District in making this important event a reality. I hope you’ll join us in witnessing the joy, courage, and determination of these inspirational athletes."
