'Stronger With Pride': Harlem Pride 2021 Theme, Events Announced

This year's festivities include both virtual and in-person events.

HARLEM, NY — Each year, the first day of June brings with it a celebration of Pride and members of the LGBTQIA+ community, both in Harlem and across the country. This year, the 12th Annual Harlem Pride plans on coming back stronger than ever, a sentiment solidified by its 2021 theme: "STRONGER WITH PRIDE!"

Upcoming events include:

  • Friday, June 4 at 7 p.m.: Virtual film screening of "Love The One You're With," a dramatic comedy that follows a couple navigating a long-term relationship. The screening will feature filmmaker Sampson McCormick. Register for the free screening here.
  • Saturday, June 5 to June 18: Virtual film screening of "Cured," a documentary chronicling the campaign that led the American Psychiatric Association to remove homosexuality from its manual of mental illnesses. Talk Back on June 18th at 7pm will feature Rev. Magora Kennedy of the National Action Network, LGBTQ Committee. Register for the film screening here.
  • Sunday, June 6 at 10 a.m.: Community bike ride with Harlem Cycle, a Black-owned gym and workout studio. Meet the group at Central Park West and 110th Street for a ride through the park. For those who don't have bikes, the group will provide free day passes for Citibike. All levels are welcomed (In the event of rain, event will be rescheduled for a later date).   • Friday, June 11 at 10 a.m. & Monday, June 21 at 6 p.m.: Free virtual yoga sessions in partnership with Three and a Half Acres Yoga. Register for the June 11 session here and the June 21 session here.
  • Saturday, June 26 at 6 p.m.: Virtual Harlem Pride Celebration Event with celebrity guest appearances, performing artists and greetings from community leaders, health practitioners and elected officials.

Harlem Pride was co-founded by Lawrence Rodriguez and Carmen Neely. On Saturday, June 26, 2010, the first Harlem Pride Day Celebration was held on the block of West 119th Street, between Lenox and Fifth Avenues. Since 2010, Harlem Pride has expanded to include community forums, workshops, networking events, and other community outreach activities.

This year's Harlem Pride sponsors include Harlem United, Center for Black Equity, West Harlem Development Corporation, Sage, Gilead and New York-Presbyterian. Funding for Harlem Pride 2021 is provided by NYC Department of Youth & Community Development.
