Swimming in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness and other infections, health officials warn.

HUNTINGTON BAY, NY — Knollwood Beach and the Huntington Beach Community Association, both in Huntington Bay, are closed to bathing because of high levels of bacteria, Suffolk County health officials stated on Thursday.

Swimming in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat, county health officials said.

The beaches will reopen when "further testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels," officials said.
