Greenlawn Firefighter Recognized As Suffolk Legislative District 18's Best

RIVERHEAD, NY — Matthew Paulsen was recognized as the 2025 Volunteer Firefighter Honoree for the 18th Legislative District during the Suffolk County Legislature’s General Meeting on Aug. 5 in Riverhead, Legislator Stephanie Bontempi's office announced.
Paulsen, an assistant chief with the Greenlawn Fire Department, was one of 18 honorees selected by each legislator as part of the county’s annual recognition of volunteer firefighters.
"Matthew exemplifies the best qualities of our volunteer firefighters," Bontempi said in a news release. "His years of service and numerous awards reflect his dedication and leadership, which truly make a difference in the lives of the residents of Greenlawn."

Paulsen's passion for the fire service began in childhood when he would don his grandfather's
retired FDNY gear, dreaming of a future in firefighting. In 2004, he officially joined the Huntington Manor Fire Department, marking the start of a career that now spans over two decades. After moving to Greenlawn, Paulsen continued his service with the Greenlawn Fire Department, where he quickly advanced through the ranks and earned numerous certifications, including EMT, Incident Safety Officer, and training for the Rapid Intervention Team.
He has also held several leadership roles, including captain of the Hose Company from 2021 to 2022, third assistant chief for 2023 to 2024, and is currently serving as second assistant chief.

In 2022, Paulsen was honored as the Firefighter of the Year by the Greenlawn Fire Department. He also received the REMSCO Lifesaving Award in 2024, along with several other commendations for his lifesaving efforts.
As second assistant chief, Paulsen responds to approximately 900 calls each year, providing essential emergency medical services and fire protection to the Greenlawn community and neighboring areas.
